transderivational constraints in the minimalist program
Note: This excludes (1-c) in English: Overt V-to-T movement violates Strength ofIn contrast, overt V-to-T movement in (1-a) in French does not violate this constraint. Still, something extra needs to be said about (1-b) in French, which vacuously fulfills Strength of T, just like (1-d) in English does. Thus, the question is: Why is overt V-to-T raising obligatory if it is possible? Chomsky’s (1991) background assumption is that inflection is base-generated inIf V does not raise to T, T must lower to V in .

optimality theory and the minimalist program
.1 Introduction The Minimalist Program (Chomsky 1995, 2000) and Optimality Theory (Prince and Smolensky 1993, . 2005). Minimalism, as Chomsky notes (2000:41), is a research program –not a theory– investigating to what extent the language faculty. to pursue an OT-perspective of human grammar while maintaining minimalist goals, a fact highlighted by many contributors to the DEAL. that an OT-approach to grammar is actually essential to minimalist investigations, because it dramatically widens the set of linguistic properties.

In this paper I will show that there are constructions in which wh-NPs in situ must undergo LF wh-movement in spite of the possibility of unselective binding. I will use such constructions to investigate locality restrictions on LF wh-movement. While I will argue, along with Huang and contra Tsai and Reinhart, that there is a difference between LF and overt movement with respect to locality restrictions on movement, the conclusion I reach is very different from Huang’s. In particular, I will argue that LF.
